AFC Teams and Picks

The AFC

The NFL is divided into two leagues, and the one we will be focusing on is the American Football Conference, or simply known as the AFC. The AFC was founded in 1970, and it wasn’t always known as the AFC, but instead was called the American Football League. It changed its name when the NFL and the AFL merged. As the NFL is split straight down the middle, the AFC has a total of 16 teams playing in the league. The latest team to join the AFC ranks was the Houston Texans in 2002. Each league is then split into divisions of East, West, North, and South with each having 4 teams. This is done so that the NFL tournament can be better organized and have better chances at competing against the other divisions. There are some teams that stand out, while others are still on the tough road to success in the AFC. Breaking them down, showing which teams have potential, and what odds they are given to win the Super Bowl is a great way to start betting on the NFL.

AFC Divisions

AFC North

The AFC North division is made up by the Baltimore Ravens, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The most notable team are the Steelers, having won 6 Super Bowls, with their latest being in 2008.

AFC South

The AFC South is comprised of the Indianapolis Colts, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Tennessee Titans, and the newest addition to the AFC conference, the Houston Texans. The Indianapolis Colts, having won the Super Bowl 4 times, although only once with their present team name; in 2006.

AFC East

The AFC East is made up of the Buffalo Bills, the Miami Dolphins, the New York Jets, and the New England Patriots. The Patriots have been able to win 3 Super Bowl championships, two of which were back to back; winning in 2001, 2003, and 2004. They have proved they are a great team, and have high odds of getting to the Super Bowl.

AFC West

The AFC West has the Denver Broncos, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders, and the San Diego Chargers. The Denver Broncos are the leaders in the pack, winning two Super Bowls in 1997 and 1998. They are set to start winning games with their new starting QB, Peyton Manning.

Three AFC Teams to watch out for

There are three teams that sports fans and bettors should keep an eye out for; the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, and the Houston Texans.

New England Patriots

The Patriots are currently ranked 1st in their division, and their team statistics are impressive to say the least. They barely lost the New York Giants during Super Bowl XLVI, putting up a great fight. The Patriots are ranked as following:

Based on these rankings, the Patriots are a very offensive minded team, focusing mainly on passing instead of rushing; especially with QB Tom Brady, TE Aaron Hernandez, and WR Mathew Slater. The Patriots are given 13/2 odds at winning the 2013 Super Bowl XLVII.

Denver Broncos

The Broncos came off of a very good season, and are set to do even better this season. Their ranking are:

The Broncos may not have had a very good season when it came to passing, but are ranked first in rushing yards. Their passing yards will only improve with their recently acquired QB, Peyton Manning. As such, the Broncos are being given 16/1 odds to win the 2013 Super Bowl XLVII.

Houston Texans

Despite being a very new team to the NFL, they have been able to rise in the rankings; especially in defense. They have a slightly above average QB, Matt Schaub, but what they are good at is rushing with RB Ben Tate and RB Arian Foster.

The Texans apply the quote of “the best offense is a good defense”, and in this case their offensive line does a very good job at defending the runners and creating opportunities for them. They have an amazing defensive line, making them a powerful opponent to anyone that has an average offense. They are given odds of 12/1 to win the 2013 Super Bowl XLVII.

Three AFC Underdog Teams

These three AFC teams are the conferences underdogs, as they are deemed to have very low odds of making it to the playoffs, let alone winning the Super Bowl.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns had a horrible last season, proving to the world that they lack the good team play necessary to win games. They are ranked:

These stats are pretty low compared to the other teams, especially their offensive rankings. It would seem their QB, Colt McCoy isn’t performing as well as he should be, as last season he had 11 interceptions against him. The Browns defense is strong when it comes to stopping passing plays, but is very weak when their opponents are strong at rushing the ball. They are given odds of 150/1 to win the 2013 Super Bowl XLVII.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts used to be a powerhouse when it came to scoring and beating their opponents, but ever since their star QB, Peyton Manning, left for the Broncos, as well as losing other notable players, their whole offense was in shambles.

The Colts never did possess a great defensive team, since they relied heavily on their offense to win the games. Now that their offense has suffered, the overall team now lacks both offense and defense. They are using their back up QB’s, Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky, but they lack experience and skill. The Colts should focus on strengthening both lines, and then maybe will they become Super Bowl contenders again. They are given odds of 150/1 to win the 2013 Super Bowl XLVII.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars have never been big contenders, for the Super Bowl nor the Playoffs.

Despite having a slightly above average defense, they do not have a very good offense. The Jaguars have always been plagued by poor QB’s, like David Garrard and Luke McCown. The Jaguars are given the worst odds at winning the 2012 Super Bowl XLVII, at 200/1.
